Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) form a key role in the rheology of endogenous synovial fluid. Synovial fluid provides nourishment to hyalin cartilage, lubrication of joint surfaces and a viscoelastic environment to dissipate load bearing and sheer forces. In degenerative joint conditions, there is a reduction in synovial fluid and GAGs thus reducing these three key functions.
Providing visco-supplementation to a degenerative joint with a high GAG concentration in a hybrid cooperative complex preparation aims to restore the rheological properties of endogenous synovial fluid functions.
